I would imagine their first priority is to make sure the Pro Membership gets off to a good start and without a hitch.  Not saying this fell through the cracks, but just lower on the list.

They’ll get there, though.  They’ve still got half the month.  :)

If I remember right, I won the November,2012 drawing. They said in the digital edition that they wouldn’t have as many guns or as much gear for the regular forum members as they did in the past. It’s begining to look like there won’t be a drawing this month. Oh well we haven’t lost anything. You and I have been luckier than most.

The chance to win something is a nice bonus, but I imagine most who regularly use this forum aren’t in it just to win. This forum may not have as much action as others, but you also don’t have to wade through all the bull the others are filled with.

This is a good point.  I think, in large part, those that come and register are coming for the stuff being given away.  Why else would you have over 14,000 registered members and only a handful that actually post?  However, those that are actually here and post view it as a bonus, not the reason we stay.

Everyone,

Just wanted to give you guys an update on the drawings for March as I see you commenting on occasion.    We didn’t do a specific drawing this month for the forum as we were totally focused on the Pro Membership program.    I did announce that there would be a specific drawing for a gun dedicated to those of you that are forum members that upgrade to a pro member.    There are a few of you guys on there and the odds are pretty unbelievable since only a hand full of our regular participants signed up.    For those of you that didn’t want to spend the money, there was a free mechanism to enter all 36 drawings for the year.    So, even though we didn’t provide an opportunity specific to the forum as we have done for years, there is still plenty of stuff up for grabs.   Will keep you guys up to speed on anything else we are planning on giving away going forward.

Good Luck.   Today is the last day to become a pro member and be eligible for the trophy elk hunt with Jeff Lester and Hunt Hard.

Kinda feels like a hit to the middle class outdoor’s man who is trying to balance work, family, and outdoor hobbies. Kinda feels like those of us who don’t have extra money in a budget for these type of things are left out now.

I don’t think it’s a slight to those that are on here and decided not to do the Pro Membership at all.  Mike has mentioned several times that there is an avenue to enter all the drawings without joining (i.e., FREE).

Plus, I don’t think they ever said that the forum giveaways were going to stop.  I think they will change some.  This month they have a lot on their plate.

You’re missing the point wyflyguy, it’s not the cost of membership, it’s the cost of winning. If you win a hunting or fishing trip, you have to pay the cost to and from the destination of the hunt. Depending on where you live and your mode of transportation it could cost $500 to $1000 or more. They suggest that you give the guide a tip that is 10% of the cost of the prize. If the trip is valued at $5000 or $6000 that could be another $500 or $600 out of your pocket. You also have to pay any taxidermy costs. If you want the meat, hide, and horns you have to pay to have them shipped home. Then at tax time you have to pay the taxes That could be another $1500 to $2000. You say it’s free. Nothings free! Even winning a Browning A5 shotgun would probably cost you $400.

All valid points.  There’s only so much they can do, though.  Uncle Sam will always want his cut.  Maybe this should be viewed as a STEEPLY discounted hunt, then.

And even if you had to pay $400 for a Browning A5 that someone gave you, that’s still WAY cheaper than what you’d pay at the store (+ sales tax), right?

It seems to me that you’re saying you’d rather have them bag the Pro Membership stuff with all the hunts and just continue to give away smaller dollar amount prizes (say <$500) so the winners can avoid tax costs.  True?  (Not saying there’s anything wrong with that, by the way.)

No that’s not what I’m saying. You and the administrators keep pointing out that you can join for free, and you can. What I am saying is that you seem to think that is the reason that many people are not joining. The reason many people are not joining is that they can’t afford to win those high priced hunting or fishing trips. Even though you would save a lot of money by winning the trip, many people just can’t afford the 2 or 3 thousand dollars they would have to pay for traveling, taxes and other expenses.

I’m kind of in between. I found this website when I was recovering from an ACL repair surgery two years ago. It has always been a place where everyone was even, everyone could learn from each other, everyone had the same chance, and opportunities. Now those with more funds avaliable are given an extra opportunity, and like this month only if you’re in that elite club do you get a chance. To me this was where an avg hard working joe who liked the outdoors could seek advise, share knowledge, tell stories, and post a brag board pic. I just feel like it has changed and benefits the rich. Seems like the rich getting richer. At the end of the day I like the members and conversations so its not like I’m going anywhere. This isn’t about stuff for me it was and is about the experience, but it just feels like I’m getting shafted now by not having money.

That’s absolutely a fair statement.  I think the admins have been pretty open from the beginning that the program isn’t for everyone and I agree that it won’t be a good fit for everyone.

And I don’t think anything is changing with the forums (other than they announced that they are going to try to make it better at some point in the future).  The same people are here having the same conversations.  In the end I feel bad that people are feeling the way they are about it.  I’m betting that most of the winners from the Pro Membership program will be folks that don’t have any posts here.  But that’s pretty much the same as most months with the forum drawings.  I think it’s great to see a forum regular win something and look forward to seeing that more in the future.

Ok so here is my 2 cents on the topic. I to have been on this forum since the very beginning yes I know I have not posted much in the last year and a half but that was due to loosing my oldest son and my life has changed and been very tough to deal with but things are getting better. and I am moving on and getting back to living. I did not join this forum for the giveaways I joined to meet fellow hunters that share the same passion for hunting that I do. You can look at some of the other forums out there and they are just a bunch of bashing sites (MM) and that is the last thing we need here. No other site out there that I know of does anything for their members so what Mike, Dan and the rest of the crew here has done is way above and beyond the call of duty and they should be congratulated on what they have done. I also am not rich but for the opportunity to go on any  of these hunts for a fraction of the cost is awesome. Look at the Yukon hunts a moose hunt will cost you about $27,000 all said and done but here you could get it done for about $5 or $6,000 it is damn sure worth it to me. Plus they are also doing guns and gear which will cost you more or less nothing. If you don’t want to be in for the drawings don’t join the pro membership and just be part of the forum as always. I do not know for a fact but I figure something is in the works to still do thing for the general forum members. I do not mean to offend anyone or start a pissing match just throwing out my thoughts. This will be my last post on this subject and I hope everyone will be civil and not turn this into something ugly.

Blue….that is what stuck out to me and made me realize what was happening. Prior to that it appeared just to be an “extra” option for those who had available funds. And I thought cool, way to go guys. But with that last post about it directly affecting the forum stuff, that’s when my opinion changed. Again free is free, its hard to complain about anything. It’s just kind of sad that the whole “experience” I thought was going on here…kind feels like it is dying off. Either way I’m here for the stories, pictures, and advise. Let the good times roll.

Just one comment.  It is pretty tough to keep giving away top of the line equipment in a situation where you have little revenue to back it up with, such as the forum.  The forum has been and will continue to be a great tool for the Sportsman’s News and its followers. As has been said, the giveaways are not ending, but they are being spread across the board a little differently.

I’ve been sitting back and following this for a little while and finally decided to add my two cents worth. The changes that are being made are no real surprise because Dan and the rest of the folks are doing what they feel they need to to keep this all going. As far as some feeling like they are being left behind, that is, unfortunately, what is happening in a way. If it weeds out the one’s that are just here for the freebies the forum will wind up a better place. As far as the folks, such as myself, who couldn’t afford the pro membership, let alone the hunts, I don’t miss what I can’t afford. I did join for the freebies in the beginning, I’ve hung around because I enjoy the conversations on the various topics and have hopefully added a thing or two myself. While I would love to win one of the guns or something that I wouldn’t probably buy for myself, it’s not why I’m here. Sorry about the rambling it’the most I’ve had to say in quite awhile.

At first I joined for the firearms too, but I stayed because I enjoyed the forums. It might be a good thing if they weeded out the ones who are here just for the freebies like you said, but I can’t see that happening. They used to drop members who hadn’t made a post in over a year, but they stopped doing it because it made it to hard to attract sponsers. As a result they now have members who haven’t made a post in four years. One of the members on the top posters list hasn’t made a post in more than two years. If they dropped the ones who haven’t made a post in more than a year they would probably have to drop at least half of the members. If they weeded out the ones who are here only for the freebies they would probably have less than 50 members. I don’t think that’s going to happen. They only have about 100 members who make an occasional post, about 20 who make regular posts. Maybe they do need to thin out the membership.

I am on a number of forums that spread over quite a diversity of subjects and every one of them have the same problem, only a small percentage actually post and the vast majority are ghost, just sit
and watch everyone else post. Would be interesting to see what percentage at least view the forums occasionally verses sign up and never come back.

I actually check in almost daily to see what has been posted, but only make a post if it’s relevant. I don’t post just to make my count go up. As far as paying for things not included on prize trips, I would be able to do so, but also see where some folks would have a problem. Mostly with the travel and tipping on a big trip. That shouldn’t stop SW from doing it though. If folks don’t want to enter it’s their choice. I let the free entry pass by mainly because I’m lazy and have little time once I get home from work. Not worried about it because what are the odds I would actually have WON if I had sent in a postcard? I’m not that lucky. May try to make more of an effort later.

I also originally joined for the firearm giveaways.  I have also used the forum to give input to others and to gain knowledge for myself. I personally don’t sign up for some large giveaways even on other sights.  One of the main reasons being taxes.  If you are expected to pay travel costs, tips etc. in addition to taxes on the prize.  Then it is not something I feel I can afford.  I would prefer prizes with a value of between $400-$1,500.  I could probably afford the taxes etc. on that.  Sportsman’s has the right to do what they wish with their prizes/finances but I don’t plan to join the Pro-Members.  I admit that I am disappointed if they are planning to give away less guns, but that is there right and I guess that we will just have to live with it and be thankful for whatever we have the opportunity to win.  Normally something for nothing is better than nothing.

I have not been on for awhile, but did they have a giveaway for March or April?  Are they planning one for May?  I have not seen any information on a regular monthly non-digital giveaway except for those for pro members.

No, they didn’t. They say the forum drawings haven’t went away, but if they haven’t, they’re doing a very good job of hiding them. I think the Pro Membership program is taking all of their time. If I’m not mistaken, Mike said they have nearly 300 members so far.

You haven’t missed anything.  There hasn’t been a forum giveaway in a few months.  I think Blue is right – they certainly want to make sure the Pro Membership gets off the ground right.  They’ve invested a lot of time and money into it.

If they only have about 300 members, they’re going to lose a lot of money. They need another 710 members just to break even this year.

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Sometimes if you have a good thing its best to learn just to be content in life.

Those who would sacrafice their freedom for a little bit of security deserve neither.
