I would never discourage anybody from buying a new Ruger rifle, Jim – go for it and post a range report for us.  It looks to me liike a very handy package in a great caliber.  I think they come with a 10-rd mag and I'd get one of the Ruger brand three-round polymer mags to use for hunting.

I haven't shot one but I've handled a few. They had nice triggers and good sights which. The only real problem I have with them is the receiver is investment cast and the rails the bolt rides in has this cast surface and tends to bind the bolt unless you polish them, which I did on the last one I bought. I'm still uncommited on whether to buy one yet. I have a scout I built and have alot less money in it but I did the work on it myself. I would really like the extra capacity of the removable magazine though.

so you must be refering to the M77 bolt receiver in general? I was confused at first when you said ” I haven't shot one” and then you said ” which I did on the last one I bought” I take it that Ruger is using the receiver action from past rifle models?

Yes they use the same method to produce the rifle as for their other products. They make some wonderful castings but for some reason they don't leave stock to machine the receiver rails or take time to polish them. Look inside and you'll see. A half hour of careful polishing will fix it. The last Ruger I had was a semi-custom 25-06 that I left the original barrel on. It was a very accurate gun and reliable too.

Ruger uses the M77 platform for the Gunsight Scout model.  IIRC, American Rifleman did a favorable report on it last year. I have an old-model M77 tang safety rifle in .308 that is rugged, reliable, and very accurate.

The only quibble I have with the Gunsight Scout is the price point.  The MSRP is almost $1K although I think they're selling in the high $700s most places.  That seems a pretty high price to me but the multi-function idea is appealing.  Don't know yet – I'd like to see a good report by an actual user.

And a report after they use it for awhile to see just what was good and bad when used hard.
When someone needs to pay the rent and sells one reasonably used I'll get one. The assault style weapons have been showing up regularly in nearly new condition for good prices.

That's a good point, Mark, and I agree with you.  I don't think Ruger makes a .30 caliber S/A platform but I wonder if the Gunsight Scout would be a bit more appealing if it were a S/A .308 and competed with the M1A series of rifles, especially the SOCOM, which it sort of resembles anyway.  That would make the price point more competitive, too, since the SOCOM sells for well above $1K.

Just a thought.

Well I made up my mind to go with the Scout. SW has a friendly layaway plan and that was my plan to chip away at it over 2 months> but they were out of it, so plan B was putting my name on the waiting list. I'm #2 for the Scout>$799.00 plus tax. No hurry, I have until November's deer hunt back in Pa. but i can't wait until I start paying for itCool

You'll love the scout concept and Ruger makes a rugged firearm. The triggers one the ones I've handled are nice too. Good choice.

Does anyone know if the Ruger Scout is on the president’s list as being an unacceptable firearm?  I am seriously considering purchasing one but if I do I don’t want to have it confiscated or have a special tax put on it.  It has a detachable magazine, but it is a bolt action instead of a semi-auto.  I am left handed and I know where they are supposed to have a left handed model in stock for a good price.

As far as I can tell bolt actions are not being payed attention to but I havent seen a defined list. Yet.

Thank you for the info.  I also sent a message to the online dealer who has one in stock to see what the dealer has to say.  I probably won’t hear anything back from them before Monday or Tuesday, and I would like a more definitive answer before then if possible.

I haven’t, I have yet to buy the Ruger Scout rifle, but I am seriously considering it.  I sold my .270 Savage today along with its ammo in anticipation of buying a .308.  My Savage did not have a detachable magazine, which I really want.  I am left handed, so I am very limited in my options for a .308 with a detachable magazine especially since I want to stay under the $800-850 range.  I know Ruger has a good reputation.  Too bad they haven’t come out with the American rifle in .308 in a left handed version.

I just got a scout about a week ago, nice rifle, nice fit and finish, unfortunately the closest range to me that I regularly go to is snowed in right now so I haven’t had a chance to shoot it yet. Hopefully I’ll get out there soon.

Still trying to afford a good piece of glass for it, right now I just have my Vortex SPARC mounted on it, considering that I’m not a big fan of “scout scopes” I may just opt for a Vortex Viper PST 1-4X, but at the same time I may stay with the red dots for longer and get a longer range scope first, my Savage 10FP needs glass too and I would probably be better off getting one for both of them first, then getting the 1-4X that I can use on anything.

I don’t think they’re going after bolt guns YET, but I believe they will in the long run. My long standing opinion on this is pretty smple, they want to ban ALL FIREARMS, if you’re a “hunter” and you think that you’re safe from the lefties, you’re dead wrong!

I agree that thier goal is total disarmament and it will be in chunks, that is why it is important for all gun owners to express thier support for the second ammendment and stand up to any infringement on our right to keep and bear arms.

I am, and I urge anyone who loves guns and never thought about joining to do it. SmileI meet a lot of people at the range that had never thought about joining the NRA and after talking with them said they would like to join, I hope they did.

Well, I purchased a Scout online and it is supposed to arrive at the “local” gun shop on Tuesday.  I purchased a Leupold 2-7x33mm Rifleman scope for it.  I decided against a scout type scope since I plan to use it for mule and/or whitetail deer hunting.  I was surprised that the Leupold scope did not come with lens covers.  Even some (if not all) of the cheaper scopes I have owned have had the caps to put over the lenses that were held in place by elastic straps/strings.  Is it usual for Leupold to not even provide cheap lens covers?

I have never purchased a Leupold that came that way.  All of my long guns except for the Remington R-15 have Leupolds on them.  I usually buy a good set of butler creek covers from SW.

I purchased a new Ruger Scout (left hand model) a couple of months ago.  It came with a ten round metal magazine.  I have since purchased 3 and 5 round magazines and wish to sell the 10 round metal magazine.  I would like $65 for the magazine.  It has had ammunition loaded into it, but it has never had ammunition fired out of it.  New condition.  Will mail to you for free in continental USA.  I believe this is the same as Ruger item number 90353.  This item costs about $74.95 at:

Price reduced to $63

It is now sold

I took my Scout out to the range and put it in a weighted mtm case-gard shoulder-gard Rifle rest.  I was extremely pleased with the accuracy of the carbine at 100 yds.  Especially considering it only has a 16″ barrel.  I was shooting 150 gr. Fusion ammunition.

I have been shooting Federal Fusion 150 grain ammunition in my Scout and it seems to be quite accurate.  Does anyone have experience shooting heavier weight bullets in a Ruger Scout and if they do, were the heavier bullets fairly accurate?  Thanks for your input.

I have now killed two mule deer with my Ruger Gunsite Scout in .308.  I killed one doe at over 200 yards  and one buck at around 200 yards.  I am pleased with the Ruger Scout except for a couple of things.  It is heavy if you are going to carry it for any length of time and if you are going to shoot a number of rounds out of it at the range the recoil can get to be a bit much.  When I am shooting at a deer I don’t notice the recoilWink

Sounds like a good deer season. Congrats on the hunts.
