Image EnlargerCongratulations to Ken Judd of Colorado, our first great gun giveaway winner.  Ken frequents the Sportsman’s News Forum under the username of colorado hunter. He has posted 182 times in our forums. You only needed to register to win, but for each 25 posts on the forums, each contestant earned an additional entry in the drawing. Only one other user posted more than Ken, so this is a great example of how it pays to participate often.  Post counts continue to build so those who participate will continue to have a vast advantage over those who don’t and even Ken can win again and again. Ken, give the Sportsman’s News office a call at (435) 865-1680 on Monday to claim your prize.  Congratulations and thanks for participating in the forums.

It shoots pretty good!  I took it out on Monday.  Even though the conditions were pretty bad – very windy, hot, dusty, and dry as bones – I just couldn't wait any longer.  I have two other ARs but both are much heavier than the M&P and have carry handles.  This is exactly the kind I've been wanting – light and a flat top.  I put several different kinds of ammo through it with bullet weights from 55 grains up to 68, including a mag of my best handloaded match rounds.  Zero malfunctions of any kind and every group was more than acceptable.  The trigger compares very well to my Colt Match HBAR and comes close to the RRA two-stage match trigger.

In short, this rifle is a great and I'll be surprised if S&W doesn't sell truckloads of them.  I don't think anything else comes close anywhere near that price point.  I'm just as pleased as I can be with it and I'm also very grateful to Sportsman's News for presenting it to me.

That's great to hear, I'm glad you're happy with it. I don't own an AR (yet), so it's nice to hear feedback.

CH-Smith and Wesson will be happy with your kind words about the gun for sure.  I've let Tom Seward at Smith know about all the good feedback already.

There's no shortage of ARs to choose from but for general plinking and just plain fun, this one is at the top of my list.  At 6 1/2 pounds and 32 inches (folded) it's a great carbine to carry in the field for any other purpose, too.

Thanks, Mike – they came up with a real winner in this one.  Packing it with a 30-round Magpul was a nice touch, too.

CH, great to see you got out and shot that fine firearm.  Glad to hear it shoots so well also.  I love the AR platform for plinking and target shooting as well as some good ol varmint hunting.  Have never picked up the S&W but may have to the next time Im in SW and see how it feels.  congrats again on winning the AR.

Do more than what is expected of you.

Well, we have another one to give away in December. Sorry Shivley, you won't be able to win it as it is illegal in California.  He have a hat set aside for you just in case you win.Wink JK.

A hat huh…well that sounds like a decent trade-offSurprised.

Maybe you should have just ordered the CA version of the M&P15 in anticipation of me winning! Laugh

Oh well, it's all good, some lucky basstrad is going to have an extra special Christmas this year.

Shiveley, I read about the California-legal version of the M&P and trust me, you wouldn't want to own such a thing.  I keep telling you, pal – come to Colorado and we'll fix you up.

It's tempting; my best buddy recently moved just outside of Denver, he's running the Treasury Dept. office out there. His whole office was issued MP5's with the option to buy one for personal use. I couldn't convince him to buy an extra one for me, so I'm not sure he's my best bud anymore Wink

Well, they do have some really nice hats!  Wink

Seriously, I've come to know these guys a little and you can be sure they will take care of you if you win the draw, stoopid California rules or not.  They are good people.

[The CA-legal model has a fixed mag and you have to load it by pushing out the rear take-down pin and swiveling the upper reciever forward and then pushing the rounds into the mag from above.]

Thanks – the more experience I have with it, the more it validates everything I said to begin with – it's a very solid, accurate, light-weight rifle that has everything it needs.  It's a real hoot to shoot, too.

It popped into my head yesterday that the M&P Sport handles like the old Colt CAR-15 Commado carbine that I had some experience with back in the day.  There was no forward assist on the CAR either and for some reason that changes the feel of the weapon.  It's a very handy design and I intend to keep it well-maintained and keep shooting it.
