So I have won a gun giveaway from the USCCA. The giveaway was for a Glock 19. After making all the arrangements and getting details about the win I found out what I am actually getting is a gift card to Palmetto State Armory for the value of the gun. Apparently USCCA is not an FFL so they cannot actually transfer firearms. With that being said I was told if I don’t like a Glock 19 I can actually use the funds/gift card to buy any gun I want from the Palmetto State Armory website.

I am not a Glock fan and already have some laying around the house, so I am trying to decide what else to get. This is where I am looking for opinions. I don’t know what to get! lol I know terrible position I am in. I have about 6 weeks before the gift card gets here to make up my mind. Help!

I am looking at a couple options I guess;

A cowboy SAA (undecided Make or Caliber) or a cowboy lever action rifle (undecided Make or Caliber)…maybe 45-70 govt???

Ruger Mini 14, Springfield Armory M1A Socom, an AR10 (undecided MAKE).

I have a 1911 but maybe another one? I have some bolt guns but maybe one in 300 winmag or 338 lapua?

Those who would sacrafice their freedom for a little bit of security deserve neither.

First you would need to know how much the gift card is worth. If the giveaway was for a Glock 19, it probably won’t cover some of the guns you have listed. My first choice would be the Ruger Mini 14, second a standard Springfield M1A, and third would be a Ruger Vaquero 357 magnum. But the gift card probably won’t cover firearms in the price range of the Springfield M1A’s. I don’t have any idea which would be best for you. Only you can make that decision. Congratulations on your win.

Gift card ends up being for $620. I don’t mind using my own money on top of it.

I’m really thinking about getting a SAA in 357mag. My thought would be to sell my Winchester in 30-30 and get one in 357mag so I have a matching caliber cowboy set.

I’m still debating how much usage I could actually get out of the 357mag round from a rifle. I don’t know how much further it would truly extend the productivity of the round? 150 yards, maybe 200 yards?

My cousin has an old Winchester 38-40 lever action that he got second hand about 57 years ago. His brother has killed several deer with it but he was hunting with dogs. I don’t know what the effective range is.

My $0.02 on the matter….

First – CONGRATULATIONS on the win!  That’s an awesome early Christmas present!

I like where you’re headed with your thinking.  .357 is a great caliber and fun to shoot.  I’ve always thought it would be a blast to hunt javelina with a lever action rifle shooting either .357 or .44 Mag.

If it were me, I’d be looking to get something that I could get some use out of.  Personally, that would mean something I could target shoot/plink with and maybe also use it for hunting occasionally.  The lever action rifle or an AR would fit that bill.

Let us know what you decide on!

I have multiple AR15s but nothing in 308 besides a bolt gun for hunting.

I really enjoy the more traditional cowboy style guns but want something that is going to be useful for hunting as well as fun.

I have concerns about the effectiveness and distance of the 357 round out of a rifle. If it is still good at 150 to 200 yrds I will go that route.

Any wisdom you can offer on the rounds effective range??

Unfortunately, no.  I’ve only ever used that round out of a hand gun.

I just did a really quick Google search on the effective range of a .357 magnum rifle.  It seems like 125-150 yards is about the max of what folks are comfortable with.

Good luck!

I did a lot of research myself and talked to a few guys. I decided to get a 357. I am going to get a Uberti Cattleman in 357 and then when I can by a matching rifle. Looks like Sportsman’s is having a military and first responder sales event next Saturday. I might go and pull the Vet card on Saturday if they have any Rossi or Winchester in 357 on the shelf.

So . . . how’d it go–and how does it shoot!?
