Big Sand is located 525 miles north of Winnipeg, Manitoba and contains some of the most sought-after trophy fish in North America including 20-30+ lb. northern pike, 40+ lb. lake trout, 4-6 lb. average walleye and Arctic grayling. Our facility at Big Sand is the only lodge on the lake. There are no roads leading to Big Sand, so the only way to get here is to fly. All guests arrive at Big Sand via twin turbo prop passenger aircraft, landing at our private airstrip. Situated high atop an ancient glacial esker, the main lodge was built with the guests’ needs foremost in mind. We have also taken the traditional Outpost and raised it to a new level giving you the best fishing opportunity that Canada has to offer. Chipewyan Lake has a camp manager and a cook to look after everything at the camp, while you fish at your own schedule. Want to be completely on your own, then try one of our Wilderness Outposts Camps at Jordan Lake, LeClair Lake or Wolf Lake.
Moose and black bear hunting are also superb. The World Record black bear, weighing 886 lbs. was killed in Manitoba in 2001, so as you can see, Manitoba’s bears are some of the largest in north America. Our bear population varies in color phases ranging from, blond, brown, cinnamon and black. “Proper Management of our resources is the key and I like to keep it that way” says General Manager, Rick Bohna. “There is no other moose hunting camp out there right now in Canada or Alaska that has had not only the success rate, but more importantly the quality of animals and sheer numbers as we have had over the past years.” We welcome you to visit us and see for yourself!

Manitoba, Canada is well known for its abundance of World Class fishing and hunting opportunities. One of our favorite destinations is Big Sand Lake Lodge, located about 525 miles north of Winnipeg. Big Sand Lake covers over 60,000 acres, stretch out to more than 70 miles in length and is home to record sized northern pike, lake trout and walleye, as well as big Canadian moose, black bear and wolves.
There is nothing quite like setting the hook on a big pike or lake trout and having it literally “peel” the line out of your reel. Although most of the visitors at Big Sand are hardware throwers, the fly fishing opportunities are endless and right after ice-off at the beginning of June, you can land 50 to 100 fish a day while working your way through the many secluded bays and island dotted waters.
If you want even a little more secluded wilderness adventure, you can spend stay time at one of their outpost camps and literally fish and fish until your body can’t take it anymore!!! These outpost camps are also home in the spring for great black bear adventures and in the fall for some of the best moose, bear and wolf hunting in Canada. The opportunity to hunt Canadian moose in the rut is amazing and Big Sand Lake is home to big numbers and loads of opportunity. Their guides are very knowledgeable and have hunted the area for most of their lives.
Whether you after big fish in both numbers and size or a giant Canadian moose, black bear or wolf, this gem of the north can put you right in the middle of the action.
