Alaska’s wild gulf coast can hold you simply spellbound with its immense mountain ranges, massive fields of ice, lush green foliage and beautiful waterways. One of our favorite stops is Yakutat, Alaska and Ken and Kip Fanning’s Yakutat Lodge. This area of Alaska truly has a lot to offer and the fishing is so good, well let’s just say, you may never want to leave!
Yakutat is home to many great fishing waters, but its prize is the Situk, home to the largest wild-stock steelhead population in Alaska. The pristine crystal clear river provides the most spectacularly beautiful arena for this simultaneously bountiful and elusive quarry. You can expect to hook into an average of six to ten of these rainbow-clad missiles on most days in the spring and as those of you that have battled the mighty steelhead know, the hook-set is only the beginning of your wild ride and adventure!
All species of salmon call this area home from June – October, the culmination hitting its peak from mid-August through September with massive numbers of big, acrobatic silvers (coho). And your adventure doesn’t stop here, with fly-outs to other great waters like the Italio, considered by many to be the ultimate silver fishery and ocean fishing is literally only minutes from the bay. Yes, Yakutat Lodge is definitely a fisherman’s dream destination.
Throw in a plethora of lodging options and all-inclusive packages including guided adventures right on down to ones that let you do a little more exploring on your own, well once you have experienced a sampling of what Yakutat has to offer, I guarantee you will be back for more!
